Revised London Plan published
London Mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled three key blueprints for the city in the shape of a revised London Plan, together with his transport and economic development strategies. All three documents are now formally out for consultation.
The London Plan covers the period up to 2031 and anticipates the city’s population growing from its current level of 7.63 million to probably around 8.89 million at the end of the plan period.
The land-use strategy outlines a new approach to housing – with greater emphasis being given to quality and space and the scrapping of the former percentage targets. These are being replaced by numerical targets agreed with individual borough councils.
The plan has proposed greater support for protecting small shops and promoting small business and incorporates new targets and tighter regulations to reduce CO2 emissions in new developments.
Also proposed is more protection, promotion and enhancement of green and open spaces, as well as waterways. The document has stressed that the Mayor "intends to take a new, more consensual approach to planning for London, working with all the agencies involved in the capital and in the neighbouring regions. This will focus more on delivery of agreed and shared objectives, less on process or structure. It will be based on a clear recognition of the need to plan for all parts of London, and all those who live, study or visit here".
